What is the name of the battlefield where the final battle of Ragnarök occurs?

The story behind the answer

Vígríðr is the battlefield where the final battle of Ragnarök occurs.

Norse sources describe Vígríðr as a vast plain where the gods and the forces of the fire giant Surtr meet. The Poetic Edda names it in Vafþrúðnismál, while Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda gives a fuller account of the armies gathering there before the world is consumed by fire.

The battlefield is the setting for several famous final confrontations. Odin faces the wolf Fenrir, Thor fights the world serpent Jörmungandr, Freyr battles Surtr, and Heimdallr and Loki kill one another. The gods’ champions win some individual fights, but the old cosmic order is destroyed.

Vígríðr is often confused with Asgard or Valhalla. Those are divine locations, not the battlefield itself. The name is also rendered Vigrid or Vigrith in English translations. Another poem gives Óskópnir as a related name for the final battle’s location, but Vígríðr is the standard answer to this question.
