Jackie Robinson Award
Answer
Jackie Robinson Award
The MLB Rookie of the Year receives the Jackie Robinson Award. It is presented annually to the outstanding rookie in both the American League and National League.
The award began nationally in 1947, when Brooklyn Dodgers infielder Jackie Robinson became its inaugural winner. For 1947 and 1948, one award covered all of Major League Baseball. Starting in 1949, the American and National Leagues each received their own winner.
The honor was originally called the J. Louis Comiskey Memorial Award, after the former Chicago White Sox owner. It was renamed the Jackie Robinson Award in 1987, four decades after Robinson broke MLB's color barrier. The Baseball Writers' Association of America votes on the winners.
This award is often confused with the Silver Slugger Award, Gold Glove Award, or Cy Young Award. Those recognize offensive production, defensive excellence, and pitching, respectively; the Jackie Robinson Award specifically honors a player's first outstanding MLB season.
