What is the name of the award given to the best pitcher in each league?

The story behind the answer

The Cy Young Award is given to the best regular-season pitcher in each Major League Baseball league. There is one winner in the American League and one in the National League.

The award was introduced in 1956, named for Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young, who died the previous year. For its first 11 seasons, MLB presented a single award covering both leagues. Beginning in 1967, the award was split into separate American League and National League honors.

Members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America vote for the winners. Voters rank pitchers, weighing first- through fifth-place selections. The award recognizes regular-season performance, so postseason success does not directly determine the result. Roger Clemens holds the record with seven Cy Young Awards.
