What is the name of the Australian stock exchange?

The story behind the answer

The Australian stock exchange is called the Australian Securities Exchange, commonly abbreviated ASX.

The ASX is Australia’s primary securities exchange and is headquartered in Sydney. It operates markets for shares and other products, and its wider group also provides clearing, settlement, and related market infrastructure. The exchange’s modern form was created in 1987 through the amalgamation of six state-based securities exchanges.

Its name is sometimes shortened informally to “the Australian exchange,” while “Sydney Stock Exchange” is a separate entity and should not be treated as the official name of the national exchange. NZX is New Zealand’s exchange; SIX Swiss Exchange and Borsa Italiana are based in Switzerland and Italy, respectively.

The ASX later expanded its derivatives presence when it merged with the Sydney Futures Exchange in 2006. Major Australian benchmarks associated with the market include the S&P/ASX 200 and the All Ordinaries, but those are indexes—not the exchange itself.
