Atlanta's New Year's Eve Peach Drop traditionally lowers a giant peach at midnight.
The event takes place in downtown Atlanta and draws its symbol from Georgia's nickname, the Peach State. The peach is lowered during a public celebration that includes live entertainment, a countdown, and fireworks or other festivities depending on the year's program.
Atlanta held its first Peach Drop in 1989. The event later became associated with Underground Atlanta, the downtown shopping and entertainment district, although venues and operating arrangements have changed over time. The object is a large illuminated replica rather than an actual piece of fruit.
The Peach Drop is one of several American New Year's Eve events modeled on the Times Square Ball Drop. It should not be confused with Atlanta's annual Georgia Peach Festival or with peach-themed summer events elsewhere in Georgia. In years affected by public-safety restrictions or construction, the city has sometimes altered or canceled the celebration.
