What is the name of the artificial woman created by Ilmarinen?
Answer
Kultamorsian
Answer
Kultamorsian
The artificial woman created by Ilmarinen is called Kultamorsian, or the Golden Bride.
After losing his first wife, the master smith Ilmarinen tries to forge a replacement from precious metals. He makes the figure from gold and silver, using his extraordinary smithing skills to imitate a living woman. Despite its beauty, the creation is cold, hard, and incapable of returning affection.
Ilmarinen attempts to give the golden bride to his brother Väinämöinen, but Väinämöinen rejects her. He advises that she should be melted down and turned into ornaments instead. The episode therefore treats wealth and craftsmanship as poor substitutes for human companionship.
Kultamorsian literally means “Golden Bride” in Finnish. It is also the name associated with the relevant traditional rune or song, so English retellings may describe the figure as the Golden Wife, Golden Maiden, or Bride of Gold rather than use the Finnish term. The woman is not presented as a normal human character with an independent personal name.
