São Silvestre Road Race
Answer
São Silvestre Road Race
The annual New Year’s Eve road race held in São Paulo, Brazil, is the São Silvestre Road Race.
The race is traditionally run on December 31 through the streets of São Paulo. It is named after Saint Sylvester, whose feast day is observed on December 31 in the Western Christian calendar. The event has become one of Brazil’s best-known sporting traditions.
The first race was held in 1925, and it was created by journalist Cásper Líbero after he was inspired by a nighttime race in France. The course and distance have changed over the decades, but the event remains associated with the final day of the year.
The race is often called Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre in Portuguese. It is a road race, not a marathon: its modern course is substantially shorter than the standard marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres.
