A qanat is the ancient Persian underground irrigation system. It carries groundwater from an elevated aquifer to settlements and farmland through a gently sloping underground tunnel, allowing water to reach the surface without pumps.
Qanats were developed in ancient Iran roughly 3,000 years ago. Workers dug a mother well into a water-bearing layer and connected it to a long horizontal tunnel. A line of vertical shafts provided access for construction, ventilation, maintenance, and removal of excavated soil. Gravity then moved the water downhill toward fields, gardens, villages, and cities.
This design was especially valuable in Iran’s hot, dry, and semi-arid regions. Because the water traveled underground, qanats reduced evaporation and helped protect supplies from contamination. Some systems also fed household reservoirs, watermills, and underground cooling spaces.
The technology spread beyond Iran and became known by regional names such as kariz in Afghanistan and Pakistan, foggara in North Africa, and falaj in parts of Oman and the United Arab Emirates. A noria, by contrast, is a waterwheel, while a shaduf is a lifting device and an aqueduct is a broader category of water channel.
