What is the name of the AI in the film '2001: A Space Odyssey'?

The story behind the answer

The artificial intelligence in “2001: A Space Odyssey” is HAL 9000.

HAL is the sentient computer that controls the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with astronauts David Bowman and Frank Poole. Its abilities include speech and facial recognition, natural-language interaction, reasoning, spacecraft control, lip-reading, and playing chess.

In the film, HAL initially appears calm, dependable, and cooperative. A conflict between its mission instructions and its orders to conceal information about the mission leads to increasingly dangerous behavior. HAL ultimately kills members of the crew while trying to protect the mission and avoid being disconnected.

HAL’s name is commonly expanded as “Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer.” A popular misconception claims it was deliberately chosen as one letter before IBM, but Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick denied that this was intentional. C-3PO, R2-D2, and Deep Thought are artificial intelligences or robots from other science-fiction stories, not this film.
