The actress who played Ashley Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was Tatyana Ali.
Ali played Ashley, the youngest daughter of Philip and Vivian Banks, throughout the sitcom’s entire six-season run from 1990 to 1996. The character begins as a relatively sheltered child but gradually becomes more independent, outspoken, and interested in music, relationships, and social issues. Her changing relationship with Will Smith’s character is one of the show’s recurring family dynamics.
Tatyana Ali was born in 1979 in North Bellmore, New York, and had already appeared on Sesame Street before joining the sitcom. Her singing ability was also featured in several episodes, and her performances helped lead to a recording career during the 1990s. A common mix-up is confusing Ashley’s actress with Karyn Parsons, who played her older sister Hilary, or with Janet Hubert and Daphne Maxwell Reid, who played different versions of Aunt Vivian.
