The 2020 documentary series about Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls career is The Last Dance. The ten-part sports documentary focuses most closely on the Bulls’ 1997–98 season, Jordan’s final season with the team, while also tracing his career and the franchise’s rise during the 1990s.
Directed by Jason Hehir, the series was produced by ESPN Films and Netflix, with participation from NBA Entertainment and Jordan’s production company, Jump 23. It premiered on ESPN on April 19, 2020, and its ten episodes aired over five weeks. Netflix later made the series widely available internationally.
The title comes from coach Phil Jackson’s description of the 1997–98 campaign. The Bulls were seeking their sixth championship in eight seasons, but tensions with the front office and uncertainty about the team’s future made the season feel like a final run for its core players.
Viewers sometimes confuse The Last Dance with a fictional basketball film or a documentary about only the 1998 Finals. It is a broader career-and-dynasty story built around that final Bulls season and previously unseen 1997–98 footage.
