The 1885 vehicle regarded as the first practical automobile was the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, built by German engineer Carl Benz. The Motorwagen was a three-wheeled vehicle with a rear-mounted, single-cylinder, four-stroke gasoline engine. Benz completed the first version in 1885 and filed the patent on January 29, 1886; the patent was granted later that year. The vehicle was publicly demonstrated in Mannheim in July 1886 and entered production soon afterward.

Bertha Benz famously proved its practicality in August 1888 by driving with her sons from Mannheim to Pforzheim and back, a journey of roughly 106 kilometers each way. Her trip exposed technical problems and helped encourage improvements such as better gearing and braking. The Benz Velo, one of the wrong options, came later as a four-wheeled successor.
