Stevie Wonder’s daughter Aisha Morris inspired the song “Isn’t She Lovely.”
Aisha was born in 1975 to Wonder and his partner Yolanda Simmons. Wonder celebrated her birth in the song, which appears on his 1976 double album Songs in the Key of Life. The track includes a recording of a baby crying and later sounds of a child, reinforcing its intimate family focus.
Wonder wrote the lyrics as a joyful celebration of parenthood rather than as a conventional romantic song. The recording became one of the best-known pieces from Songs in the Key of Life, although it was not released as a standard commercial single in the United States.
Aisha Morris later became a singer and songwriter herself. She is sometimes confused with other members of Wonder’s large family, including musician Kailand Morris, but “Isn’t She Lovely” specifically celebrates Aisha’s birth.
