What is the name of Stephen King's pseudonym under which he wrote several novels?
Answer
Richard Bachman
Answer
Richard Bachman
Stephen King’s pseudonym under which he wrote several novels was Richard Bachman.
King adopted the name in 1977, beginning with Rage, partly because publishers believed an author should release no more than one book per year. Writing as Bachman also let King test whether his success came from talent or from the Stephen King name. The Bachman books were generally darker, more pessimistic, and less supernatural than his best-known horror novels.
The identity remained hidden through several books, including The Long Walk, Roadwork, The Running Man, and Thinner. In 1985, bookstore clerk Steve Brown noticed similarities between the writing styles and found Library of Congress records connecting Bachman to King. King then announced that Bachman had died of “cancer of the pseudonym.”
A common mix-up is assuming Bachman was a separate author. King later used the name for The Regulators in 1996 and Blaze in 2007. The surname was inspired by the rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive, while “Richard” nodded to crime writer Donald E. Westlake’s pseudonym Richard Stark.
