Answer
Independence Memorial Hall
Answer
Independence Memorial Hall
Sri Lanka’s independence monument in Colombo is Independence Memorial Hall.
Independence Memorial Hall stands in Independence Square, Colombo. The monument commemorates Sri Lanka’s independence from British rule on 4 February 1948. Its architecture draws on traditional Kandyan forms, including a raised stone structure supported by columns and decorated with figures and motifs associated with Sri Lankan history.
The hall was built at the site where the formal ceremony marking the transfer of power took place. It has since become a national symbol and a setting for commemorations, public events and memorial observances. The surrounding square is also a popular civic and recreational space.
Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon when independence was granted. The country adopted the name Sri Lanka in 1972, when it became a republic. That later constitutional change does not alter the historical significance of the 1948 independence ceremony represented by the memorial.
