What is the name of Scorsese's mother, who appeared in several of his films?
Answer
Catherine Scorsese
Answer
Catherine Scorsese
Scorsese’s mother, who appeared in several of his films, was Catherine Scorsese. Born Catherine Cappa in New York, she brought a vivid, unsentimental presence to small roles in movies directed by her son.
Catherine began acting professionally after Martin cast her in his short film It’s Not Just You, Murray! She later appeared in films including Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino and The Age of Innocence. Her performances often drew on her natural personality, especially her direct delivery and unmistakable New York character.
She is particularly memorable as the mother of Tommy DeVito, played by Joe Pesci, in Goodfellas. Her scene preparing an impromptu meal while the men discuss a murder became one of the film’s most recognizable domestic interludes. Catherine also appeared alongside her husband, Charles Scorsese, in some of Martin’s films.
Catherine should not be confused with Francesca Scorsese, Martin’s daughter, who has also acted in some of his projects. Catherine died in 1997, but her performances remain part of the family texture running through Scorsese’s work.
