Lakshmana is the brother who accompanied Rama into the forest during his exile.
Lakshmana is Rama’s younger half-brother and the son of King Dasharatha and Queen Sumitra. When Rama accepted the fourteen-year sentence imposed through Kaikeyi’s demands, Lakshmana chose to abandon palace life and follow him, despite Rama’s initial wish that he remain in Ayodhya.
Sita also went into exile, making the central group three people: Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana. Lakshmana served as Rama’s companion, guardian, and helper, building shelters and sharing the hardships of forest life. His devotion is one of the defining ideals associated with his character.
He is not interchangeable with Bharata or Shatrughna, Rama’s other brothers. Bharata remained in Ayodhya and later ruled as Rama’s regent, while Shatrughna stayed chiefly with Bharata. Hanuman joined Rama later, during the search for Sita, and is an ally rather than Rama’s brother.
