What is the name of Peru’s highest mountain?
Answer
Huascarán
Answer
Huascarán
Peru’s highest mountain is Huascarán.
Huascarán rises to 6,768 metres in the Cordillera Blanca of the Peruvian Andes. Its summit is on Huascarán Sur, while the lower northern summit is known as Huascarán Norte. The mountain is protected within Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its glaciated peaks and high-Andean ecosystems.
The mountain’s steep slopes, glaciers and high altitude make climbing technically demanding. The surrounding region is also vulnerable to glacier-related hazards, including glacial-lake outburst floods. In 1970, an earthquake triggered a massive avalanche from Huascarán that buried the town of Yungay.
Huascarán is sometimes confused with Yerupajá, another exceptionally high Peruvian peak. Yerupajá is the second-highest mountain in Peru, but Huascarán remains the national height record-holder.
