What is the name of One Direction's debut single?

The story behind the answer

One Direction’s debut single was “What Makes You Beautiful.”

Released in September 2011 by Syco Records, the song was the lead single from the group’s debut album, Up All Night. It was written by Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk, with Yacoub and Falk also producing the track. Its bright guitar riff, upbeat tempo and singalong chorus quickly became central to the band’s early image.

The single was a major breakthrough in the United Kingdom. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number one after setting a Sony Music Entertainment pre-order record, and it also topped the charts in Ireland and Scotland. In the United States, it later reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

It is sometimes confused with “Gotta Be You” or “One Thing,” but those were later singles from the same early period. “What Makes You Beautiful” remains widely regarded as One Direction’s signature song and won the 2012 BRIT Award for British Single of the Year.
