What is the name of Odin's eight-legged horse?
Answer
Sleipnir
Answer
Sleipnir
Odin’s eight-legged horse is named Sleipnir. In Norse mythology, Sleipnir is described as the finest of all horses and as Odin’s remarkable steed, capable of carrying him across worlds.
The Prose Edda tells an unusual story about Sleipnir’s birth. Loki transforms into a mare to distract the stallion Svaðilfari, whose work is helping a giant builder construct a fortification for the gods. Loki later gives birth to a gray, eight-legged foal: Sleipnir. The gods eventually discover that the builder is a giant and Thor kills him.
Sleipnir’s eight legs are not merely a visual oddity. Scholars have linked them with extraordinary speed, movement between realms, and possible images of funeral bearers or shamanic journeys. In the myths, Odin rides Sleipnir through the air and even to the realm of the dead.
Sleipnir is also connected with later Scandinavian tradition. Two eighth-century Gotlandic picture stones are commonly interpreted as showing Odin riding an eight-legged horse, although the identification remains an archaeological interpretation rather than a captioned certainty.
