What is the name of NASA's small helicopter that flew on Mars?

The story behind the answer

NASA’s small helicopter that flew on Mars was Ingenuity.

Ingenuity arrived beneath NASA’s Perseverance rover, which landed in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. The helicopter was a technology demonstration: engineers wanted to test whether powered, controlled flight was possible in Mars’s extremely thin atmosphere, where the air density is less than 1% of Earth’s sea-level value.

Its first flight took place on April 19, 2021, making Ingenuity the first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet. NASA originally planned only five flights over about 30 Martian sols, but the helicopter ultimately completed 72 flights and operated for nearly three years. It also helped scout terrain for Perseverance.

A common mix-up is Dragonfly, another rotorcraft mission, but Dragonfly is planned for Saturn’s moon Titan rather than Mars. Sojourner was a small rover on Mars, while MAVEN is a NASA orbiter. Ingenuity’s final flight was in January 2024, after rotor damage permanently ended its operations.
