What is the name of Microsoft's spreadsheet application in Office?

The story behind the answer

Microsoft Excel is Microsoft's spreadsheet application in the Office suite. Excel organizes information in rows and columns and can calculate formulas, analyze data, and create charts.

Microsoft first released Excel for the Macintosh in 1985, before bringing it to Windows. The program grew out of Microsoft's earlier spreadsheet product, Multiplan, which had struggled against Lotus 1-2-3 on IBM-compatible PCs. Excel's graphical interface and formatting capabilities helped it stand out in the spreadsheet market.

Excel became part of Microsoft Office, alongside applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Access. Although these programs are often used together, they have different primary roles: Word is for documents, PowerPoint is for presentations, and Access is a database application.

Modern Excel includes functions for financial and statistical work, charts, PivotTables, data analysis, and automation through Visual Basic for Applications. Excel is now distributed through Microsoft 365 as well as through versions for Windows, macOS, mobile devices, and the web.
