What is the name of Maleficent's pet raven?
Answer
Diablo
Answer
Diablo
Maleficent's pet raven is named Diablo. He serves as her spy in Disney's 1959 Sleeping Beauty, helping her discover where Aurora has been hidden.
When Flora and Merryweather argue over Aurora's birthday dress, Diablo observes the magical commotion near the forest cottage. He reports what he sees to Maleficent, allowing her to learn that the disguised Briar Rose is actually Princess Aurora.
Diablo also helps Maleficent track events after Aurora falls asleep. During the fairies' rescue of Prince Phillip, Merryweather turns the raven to stone, temporarily preventing him from warning his mistress. That scene establishes Diablo as more than background decoration: he is Maleficent's eyes and ears.
One subtle detail often causes confusion: the raven's name is not spoken aloud in the 1959 film. “Diablo” was used by the animators during production and became the character's established name in Disney reference material and later appearances. Archimedes belongs to The Sword in the Stone, while Iago is Jafar's parrot in Aladdin.
