What is the name of Leonardo's unfinished painting of the three Magi?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo’s unfinished painting of the three Magi is called the Adoration of the Magi. It was commissioned in 1481 by the Augustinian monks of San Donato in Scopeto, near Florence, for their church’s high altar.

Leonardo began the large panel but left Florence for Milan the following year, and the work never progressed beyond a largely preparatory state. The surviving composition shows the Virgin Mary and Christ Child at the center, surrounded by the kneeling Magi and a swirling crowd of figures. Its background includes dramatic horsemen, architecture, and a ruined building.

The panel is especially important because its charcoal, ink, watercolor, and oil underdrawing reveals Leonardo’s experimental approach to composition. Rather than presenting a calm, symmetrical scene, he created a crowded and energetic image in which the religious event appears to transform a turbulent world.

Because Leonardo abandoned the commission, the monks later commissioned Filippino Lippi to paint a replacement Adoration of the Magi, completed in 1496. That is a separate painting in the Uffizi. Leonardo’s unfinished version has also undergone extensive conservation and technical study, which has clarified the original drawing beneath later paint.
