Answer
Urmila
What is the name of Lakshmana’s wife? Lakshmana’s wife is Urmila.
Urmila is a princess of Videha and the daughter of King Janaka and Queen Sunayana in the Ramayana tradition. She is Sita’s younger sister, while Mandavi and Shrutakirti are their cousins through Janaka’s brother Kushadhvaja.
After Rama won Sita’s svayamvara, the royal families arranged a four-way marriage alliance: Rama married Sita, Lakshmana married Urmila, Bharata married Mandavi, and Shatrughna married Shrutakirti. This pairing is why Urmila is sometimes confused with Sita or with one of her cousins.
Urmila’s most famous story concerns Rama’s fourteen-year exile. Lakshmana accompanied Rama and Sita, leaving Urmila in Ayodhya. Later devotional traditions say that she accepted fourteen years of sleep so Lakshmana could remain awake and guard Rama and Sita. This episode, known as Urmila Nidra, is especially prominent in later retellings, although it is not equally detailed in every version of the epic.
