What is the name of John Wayne's character in 'The Searchers'?

The story behind the answer

John Wayne plays Ethan Edwards in The Searchers. Directed by John Ford and released in 1956, the film follows Ethan, a former Confederate soldier who returns to his brother’s Texas home after an eight-year absence.

After Comanche raiders attack the Edwards homestead, Ethan’s brother, sister-in-law, and nephew are killed, while his niece Debbie is abducted. Ethan then begins a years-long search for her, accompanied by his adopted nephew Martin Pawley, played by Jeffrey Hunter. The mission gradually becomes as much about Ethan’s anger and prejudice as it is about rescue.

Ethan Edwards is sometimes confused with Wayne’s characters in other Westerns, including Tom Doniphon in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Ringo Kid in Stagecoach. The Searchers is based on Alan Le May’s 1954 novel and is widely regarded as one of the defining films of the American Western.
