Newt Scamander is J.K. Rowling’s fictional magizoologist who narrates Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
In the companion book, Newt is presented as the author of a Hogwarts textbook about magical creatures. His name appears on the cover, and the book’s fictional publication history places it within the world of Harry Potter as a reference work used by students.
Rowling later expanded Newt into the central character of the Fantastic Beasts film series. The films portray him as a British wizard and former Hogwarts student who travels with a magical case containing creatures. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt in the films.
Newt is not the same character as Theseus Scamander, his older brother, although both belong to the Scamander family. The shared surname is one reason readers sometimes conflate them. Newt’s expertise is magical zoology, while the films also connect his story to major historical events in the wizarding world.
