What is the name of Japan’s planned maglev railway between Tokyo and Nagoya?

The story behind the answer

Japan’s planned maglev railway between Tokyo and Nagoya is the Chuo Shinkansen.

The Chuo Shinkansen is being developed by Central Japan Railway Company, commonly known as JR Central. It is designed to use superconducting magnetic levitation rather than conventional steel-wheel-on-steel-rail operation.

The first planned section links Shinagawa in Tokyo with Nagoya. Much of the route is underground or in tunnels because it crosses mountainous terrain, including areas associated with the Japanese Alps. The train design is intended to reach commercial operating speeds of about 500 km/h.

The project is separate from Japan’s existing Shinkansen lines, including the Tokaido Shinkansen, which follows the more established corridor between Tokyo and Osaka. Construction and opening plans have faced engineering, environmental, and permitting issues, particularly around water resources in Shizuoka Prefecture.
