Frecciarossa 1000 is Italy’s high-speed train family introduced in 2015 as a successor to the ETR 500.
The train was developed by Bombardier Transportation, now part of Alstom, and Hitachi Rail Italy, formerly AnsaldoBreda. It was designed for domestic Italian high-speed routes and for possible international operation on compatible European networks.
The name Frecciarossa means “Red Arrow,” while 1000 identifies the train family’s project and performance branding. The trains are designed for speeds up to 360 km/h, although infrastructure and operating rules determine the speeds used in regular service.
Frecciargento is a different former Trenitalia brand, so the two names should not be treated as interchangeable.
