What is the name of Honda's humanoid robot?

The story behind the answer

Honda’s humanoid robot is named ASIMO, an acronym for “Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility.” Honda unveiled ASIMO in October 2000 after more than a decade of research into robots capable of walking on two legs.

ASIMO grew out of Honda’s experimental E-series and P-series robots. Development began with early bipedal machines in the 1980s, followed by more advanced prototypes during the 1990s. The research addressed difficult problems such as balance, uneven surfaces, autonomous movement, and interaction with people.

The robot could walk, run, recognize faces and voices, respond to commands, interpret gestures, and detect moving objects. The 2011 version stood about 130 centimeters tall and could run at up to 9 kilometers per hour. Honda presented ASIMO mainly as a technology demonstrator rather than a mass-market household product.

Honda ended ASIMO development and production in 2018, and the robot made its last active appearance in March 2022. Atlas is associated with Boston Dynamics, NAO with Aldebaran and SoftBank Robotics, and QRIO with Sony.
