What is the name of Honda's first all-electric car?
Answer
EV Plus
Answer
EV Plus
Honda’s first all-electric car was the Honda EV Plus.
Introduced in 1997, the EV Plus was Honda’s first full-fledged battery-electric vehicle with a body designed specifically for electric power. It was developed partly in response to California’s Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, which pushed major automakers to offer vehicles with no tailpipe emissions.
The compact three-door hatchback used a 28.7-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery pack and a 49-kW brushless DC motor. Honda offered it through a lease-only program rather than selling it outright, initially targeting drivers in California. Roughly 340 vehicles were produced, making it an important technology demonstrator rather than a mass-market model.
The EV Plus is often confused with the Fit EV, Clarity Electric, or Honda e because those cars were more visible to later customers. They came much later: the Fit EV launched in the 2010s, Clarity Electric followed in 2017, and the Honda e arrived around 2020. Honda discontinued the EV Plus in 1999, the same period in which it launched the Insight, its first hybrid vehicle.
