What is the name of Holden's roommate at Pencey Prep?

The story behind the answer

Holden's roommate at Pencey Prep is Ward Stradlater.

Stradlater is Holden Caulfield's older, athletic roommate in J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. He is portrayed as confident, well-groomed, popular, and physically imposing—almost the opposite of Holden's self-image. Stradlater is also described as a “secret slob,” because although he looks polished, he keeps his personal grooming items and belongings in poor order.

The conflict between the two boys intensifies when Stradlater goes on a date with Jane Gallagher, someone Holden cares about deeply. Holden writes Stradlater's English composition about Allie's baseball glove, but Stradlater dislikes it because it does not follow the assignment. When Stradlater refuses to explain what happened with Jane, Holden becomes enraged and challenges him to a fight. Stradlater easily overpowers him.

Robert Ackley is another Pencey student who lives nearby, while James Castle and Carl Luce are separate characters from Holden's school years. The roommate relationship is specifically between Holden and Stradlater.
