Harry Potter’s owl in J.K. Rowling’s novels is named Hedwig.
Hedwig is a snowy owl given to Harry by Hagrid shortly before Harry begins his first year at Hogwarts. The owl carries letters and small packages, providing Harry with an important link to the wizarding world while he is living with the Dursleys.
Although Hedwig is Harry’s pet, the character also has symbolic importance. The owl represents companionship, independence, and Harry’s connection to the magical community. Hedwig remains present through much of the series and becomes one of its most recognizable animal characters.
The name comes from Saint Hedwig, whose name Harry sees in A History of Magic. Hedwig is sometimes confused with other animal companions in the books: Hermione owns Crookshanks, Ron initially has Scabbers, and the Weasley family also keeps owls including Errol.
