Vasilopita is Greece's New Year's cake that may contain a hidden coin.
The cake is traditionally cut at New Year, often with symbolic portions assigned to Christ, the household, and family members. The person who receives the slice containing the coin is thought to receive good luck for the coming year.
The name refers to Saint Basil, or Agios Vasilios, whose feast day is celebrated in Greece on 1 January. In Greek tradition, Saint Basil is the figure associated with gift-giving at New Year, rather than the December 25 role commonly assigned to Santa Claus in many countries.
Recipes vary by region and family. Vasilopita may be a cake, sweet bread, or another baked preparation, and the coin is wrapped carefully before baking so it can be found safely.
