What is the name of Google's video conferencing service?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of Google’s video conferencing service? Google’s video conferencing service is Google Meet.

Google introduced Meet in 2017 as an enterprise-oriented video meeting service. It was designed for scheduled or ad hoc online conferences and was available through web browsers and mobile applications. The service became part of Google’s broader workplace and communication ecosystem, with connections to tools such as Gmail and Google Calendar.

Meet gained enormous visibility during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, Google expanded access beyond Google Workspace customers and made the service available to users with personal Google accounts. That move placed Meet in direct competition with services such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

Hangouts is the most common source of confusion. Google Meet was originally positioned as an enterprise-friendly successor to Hangouts, while Google Chat handled text communication. Google later merged Google Duo’s calling experience into Meet as well, creating a broader product under the Google Meet name. Skype and Zoom are competing services, not Google products.
