What is the name of Google's parent company?

The story behind the answer

Alphabet Inc. is the parent company of Google.

Google became a subsidiary of Alphabet in 2015, when the companies reorganized their corporate structure. Google retained its core businesses, including Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, and advertising, while Alphabet became the publicly traded holding company above it.

The restructuring separated Google’s mature internet products from newer or more experimental ventures. Businesses such as Waymo, the self-driving technology company, became distinct Alphabet subsidiaries rather than divisions inside Google. Alphabet’s first CEO was Google co-founder Larry Page, while Sundar Pichai became Google’s CEO and later Alphabet’s CEO.

A common mix-up is answering Google LLC, which is the legal subsidiary that operates Google’s main businesses, rather than the parent company. Waymo is also owned by Alphabet, but it is a separate subsidiary. X, formerly known as Google X, is Alphabet’s research and development organization, not the corporate parent.
