The name of Google’s parent company, formed in 2015, is Alphabet.
Google announced the Alphabet restructuring in August 2015, and Alphabet Inc. became the publicly traded parent company in October of that year. Google remained the main operating company, while other businesses and projects were placed under the broader Alphabet structure.
The reorganization separated Google’s core internet businesses from ventures such as research, life sciences, and other experimental projects. Google Search, YouTube, Android, and advertising remained central to the group’s financial performance, while Alphabet provided the corporate framework for the wider collection of companies.
Alphabet is also the name used in stock-market data and market-capitalization comparisons. A common mix-up is to call Alphabet simply “Google,” because Google is its best-known subsidiary and consumer brand. Alphabet’s shares trade under the ticker symbols GOOGL and GOOG.
