What is the name of Facebook's smart display device?

Facebook’s smart display device was called Portal. The Portal line combined a screen, speakers, microphones, and a camera for video calling, with software built around Facebook Messenger and later WhatsApp.

Facebook introduced Portal in 2018 as a dedicated video-communication device. Its camera could automatically pan, zoom, and follow people as they moved around a room, making calls feel less constrained than those made from a stationary phone or laptop camera. Later products included Portal+, Portal TV, and Portal Go, while Amazon Alexa integration added voice-control features.

The name is often confused with Facebook Home, which was an Android software interface, not a hardware display. Portal also competed in a broader smart-display market that included products such as Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show. Meta discontinued the Portal hardware line in 2023 after deciding to stop developing consumer hardware in that category.
