Facebook’s annual developer conference was called F8.
F8 was Facebook’s flagship event for developers and entrepreneurs who built applications, services, and integrations around the social network. The conference usually opened with a keynote from Mark Zuckerberg and continued with technical sessions, product demonstrations, and announcements about Facebook’s developer tools, APIs, and platforms.
The first F8 took place in 2007 at the San Francisco Design Center, where Facebook introduced its platform and discussed the idea of the social graph. Later conferences became associated with major product announcements, including the Like button and Open Graph in 2010, Timeline in 2011, and Facebook’s augmented-reality platform in 2017.
Despite being described as annual, F8 was not held every year. There were no conferences in 2009, 2012, or 2013, and the 2020 and 2021 editions were virtual. The “F8” name referred to Facebook’s tradition of eight-hour hackathons, not a sequence number, so F6, F7, and F9 are not valid alternatives.
