What is the name of Edinburgh's famous New Year's celebration?

The story behind the answer

Edinburgh's famous New Year's celebration is called Hogmanay.

Hogmanay is the Scottish name for New Year's Eve and, by extension, the celebrations surrounding the arrival of the new year. Edinburgh developed one of the world's best-known modern Hogmanay festivals, with torchlight processions, concerts, street events and fireworks around the city centre.

The celebration's traditions include singing “Auld Lang Syne,” a song strongly associated with Scottish poet Robert Burns, and the custom of first-footing. In that custom, the first person to enter a household after midnight is traditionally expected to bring good fortune, sometimes symbolized by gifts such as whisky, shortbread or coal.

Hogmanay is not the same event as Burns Night, which is held on January 25 to honor Robert Burns. Up Helly Aa, meanwhile, is a separate fire festival held in Shetland, usually in January.
