What is the name of Ecuador’s national bird, a large Andean scavenger?

The story behind the answer

Ecuador’s national bird, a large Andean scavenger, is the Andean condor.

The Andean condor is one of the world’s largest flying birds by wingspan, reaching about 3.2 metres. It inhabits high mountains and open landscapes along the Andes, where it uses thermal air currents to soar while searching for carrion. Adult males have a prominent crest, while females lack that crest.

Ecuador adopted the Andean condor as a national symbol because the bird represents strength, freedom and the high Andes. It also appears on Ecuador’s coat of arms. Despite its symbolic importance, populations face threats from habitat loss, poisoning and reduced food availability.

The bird is sometimes confused with the California condor, but the Andean species is native to South America. It is also different from Ecuador’s famous Galápagos penguin, which is a separate national wildlife emblem rather than the country’s national bird.
