What is the name of Don Garlits' famous dragster?
Answer
Swamp Rat
Answer
Swamp Rat
The name of Don Garlits’ famous dragster is Swamp Rat.
“Swamp Rat” was the name Garlits gave to successive generations of his dragsters, not just one individual car. The nickname reflected his Florida roots, and Garlits—widely known as “Big Daddy”—used numbered versions such as Swamp Rat XIII, XIV, and XXX during different stages of his career.
The cars became especially important because Garlits helped establish the rear-engine Top Fuel dragster. After a catastrophic 1970 transmission failure in Swamp Rat XIII at Lions Drag Strip severely injured his foot and split the car, he developed Swamp Rat XIV, a mid- or rear-engine design that placed the driver ahead of many dangerous mechanical components. It became successful in 1971 and helped make rear-engine dragsters the sport’s standard.
Little Red Wagon was a wheelstander, while “The Snake” refers to Don Prudhomme’s nickname. “Big Daddy” is Garlits’s nickname, not the dragster’s name. Swamp Rat XXX is particularly notable: it was enshrined at the Smithsonian in 1987.
