Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
Out of the Silent Planet is C.S. Lewis’s novel about Ransom’s journey to Mars.
Published in 1938, the book begins the trilogy commonly called the Space Trilogy. Its protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is a Cambridge philologist who is abducted and taken to the planet Mars, known to its inhabitants as Malacandra. Lewis uses the story to combine planetary adventure with questions about language, morality, theology, and the consequences of human expansion.
The next two novels are Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. The first book is sometimes confused with its sequels because all three follow Ransom’s wider story. Lewis wrote it partly in response to the scientific romances of H.G. Wells and the speculative fiction of his friend J.R.R. Tolkien.
