What is the name of Columbia's thermal reflective technology?

The story behind the answer

Columbia’s thermal reflective technology is called Omni-Heat.

Omni-Heat is Columbia Sportswear’s family of heat-management technologies. Its best-known reflective version uses small metallic dots printed or attached inside a garment to reflect some of the wearer’s body heat while allowing moisture vapor to escape. The design aims to improve warmth without relying only on thick insulation.

The name is easy to confuse with Columbia’s other branded technologies. Omni-Tech refers primarily to waterproof, breathable protection, while Omni-Shade is associated with ultraviolet protection. OutDry is a waterproof-construction technology that bonds a waterproof membrane directly to the outer shell of certain products.

Omni-Heat has also appeared beyond ordinary jackets. In February 2024, the Odysseus lunar lander used Columbia-produced Omni-Heat thermal reflective insulation technology, giving the apparel brand’s heat-management concept an unusual spaceflight connection. The exact construction varies by product, so “Omni-Heat” identifies a technology family rather than one single fabric.
