Answer
Interchange System
Answer
Interchange System
Columbia’s interchangeable 3-in-1 jacket system is called the Interchange System. It lets a wearer use a waterproof outer shell, a removable insulating liner, or both layers together.
Columbia introduced the system in 1983 as a practical answer to changing outdoor conditions. Instead of buying separate jackets for rain, mild weather, and cold, customers could combine layers in one adaptable garment. The shell and liner were designed to be worn independently or joined with zippers and attachment points.
The system became one of Columbia’s recognizable product innovations and helped support the company’s “head-to-toe” outdoor outfitting strategy. Early jackets using it included the Bugaboo Parka, which became a major Columbia ski product. Bugaboo is therefore a jacket or product-line name, not the name of the underlying layering technology.
Another frequent mix-up is with Omni-Tech and Omni-Heat. Omni-Tech refers to waterproof-breathable materials, while Omni-Heat describes thermal-reflective lining technology. Those features may appear in an Interchange jacket, but neither is the name of the three-way jacket configuration.
