The tour began on June 22, 2013, in Washington, D.C., and concluded on October 4, 2014, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It traveled through North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia, making it a worldwide tour rather than a short promotional run.

The Moonshine Jungle Tour featured Mars performing with his eight-piece backing band, The Hooligans. Its set list drew mainly from Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Unorthodox Jukebox, while also including covers and elaborate production elements.
