The I Threes were the female harmony trio who provided backing vocals for Bob Marley and the Wailers. The group consisted of Rita Marley, Bob Marley’s wife; Marcia Griffiths; and Judy Mowatt. They became part of Marley’s performing and recording lineup in 1974, after Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the original Wailers partnership.

Their harmonies became a defining part of the sound heard on the later Bob Marley and the Wailers albums and tours. They appeared prominently on Natty Dread, released in 1974, which included “No Woman, No Cry,” and continued contributing through albums such as Rastaman Vibration, Exodus and Uprising. Their voices added a gospel-influenced richness to Marley’s lead vocals and helped shape the group’s international sound.

The name is sometimes written “I-Threes” or “I Three,” but these refer to the same trio. They should not be confused with the Wailers, the Mayt นones or the Melodians: those are separate Jamaican groups.
