What is the name of BMW's motorcycle division?

The story behind the answer

BMW’s motorcycle division is called BMW Motorrad. It is both BMW’s motorcycle brand and the organizational division responsible for developing, producing and selling the company’s motorcycles and related products.

BMW has been making motorcycles since 1923, when it introduced the R 32. Designed by Max Friz, the R 32 established the horizontally opposed “boxer” twin-cylinder layout that became one of BMW’s defining engineering signatures. Shaft drive was another notable feature, helping distinguish BMW motorcycles from many competitors.

BMW Motorrad is often confused with BMW M or BMW i. BMW M is the company’s performance-car and performance-technology division, while BMW i originated as the brand for electric mobility and related technology. MINI is a separate BMW Group automobile brand, not a motorcycle business.

The Motorrad range now spans several families, including the R boxer models, the F and G single- and twin-cylinder bikes, the S sport motorcycles, the K touring machines and the C scooter line. Berlin is a particularly important location: BMW’s Spandau plant has been a major motorcycle production center for decades. The division also uses Motorrad branding for riding gear and accessories.
