What is the name of Berkshire Hathaway's home furnishings retailer based in Omaha?

The story behind the answer

Berkshire Hathaway's Omaha-based home furnishings retailer is Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Nebraska Furniture Mart was founded in 1937 by Rose Blumkin, a Russian immigrant who began selling furniture from a small section of her husband's clothing store. Known as “Mrs. B,” she built the business around low prices and direct, plain-spoken service.

Warren Buffett became familiar with the store as a customer and admired its business performance. Berkshire Hathaway purchased a controlling interest in 1983, while Blumkin remained involved for years. The retailer sells furniture, flooring, appliances, and electronics, so it is broader than its name suggests.

A common mix-up is confusing Nebraska Furniture Mart with other Berkshire-owned home-furnishings retailers, including R.C. Willey and Star Furniture. Nebraska Furniture Mart is the one headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, and it has used the shorter NFM branding since 2019.
