Australia’s national anthem is Advance Australia Fair.

The song was written and composed by Scottish-born Australian Peter Dodds McCormick and first performed in Sydney on 30 November 1878. A modified version was also sung at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, helping establish its association with national identity.

Advance Australia Fair became the official national anthem in 1974, replacing God Save the Queen. That decision was later reversed, and in 1977 the song won a national poll for Australia’s preferred national song. It was formally readopted as the national anthem in 1984, with revised lyrics and a shorter two-verse form.

Waltzing Matilda is a famous unofficial Australian patriotic song, not the national anthem. God Save the King is now the royal anthem and may be used when members of the Australian royal family are present. In 2021, the anthem’s wording changed from “young and free” to “one and free” to better acknowledge Indigenous Australians’ long history on the continent.
